Famous MMA Coaches and Where They Train
Owner and operator of Sityodtong USA Branch in Somerville MA, Mark DellaGrotte is one of the world's top MMA coaches. His experiences in a variety of styles of Martial Arts, including being a Muay Thai Champion in Thailand, has given him the opportunity to coach many big names in the UFC. Among other fighters, Mark DellaGrotte has coached Marcus Davis, Kenny Florian, Jorge Rivera, Patrick Cote and Stephan Bonnar. He was additionally selected as a Muay Thai Coach for the UFC's "The Ultimate Fighter Season 4: The Comeback" reality television show on SpikeTV.
Owner and operator of Cobra Kai Jiu Jitsu Academy in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mark Laimon is a top Grappling / Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trainer in the US. He has trained with such well known BJJ names as Joe Moreira, Royce Gracie, John Lewis and has defeated Ryron Gracie in the 2004 Grappler's Quest in Las Vegas Competition. Matt "The Wizard" Hume
Matt Hume, aka "The Wizard", is considered to be one of the most well rounded MMA experts in the world. Matt is a world champion in Submission wrestling and is undefeated in MMA's Battlecade Extreme fighting championships and additionally Kickboxing and Muay Thai. Matt is the owner and head instructor of the AMC martial arts center. At AMC he has trained many legitimate world champions including Rich Franklin, Josh Barnett, Bob Sapp, Chris Leben, Hayato Sakurai and Akira Shoji. Matt holds wins over formerly undefeated world Shooto champion Erik Paulson and formerly unbeaten UFC Welterweight Champion Pat Miletich.
Operating out of CSW Training Center, Erik Paulson has trained in many disciplines including Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling, Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali/Eskrima, Sambo, Catch Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Studying first with Rorion Gracie, Royce Gracie, Rickson Gracie in his garage in 1989 has made Paulson a top choice coach for many of fighters including Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, The Ultimate Fighter Winner James Wilks, Renato Sobral, Cub Swanson, Ben Jones and Ginelle Marquez. Paulson is so highly regarded by fighters, including the legendary Dan Inosanto, who claims Erik is one of the world's most dynamic grapplers.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Belts / Ranking Explained
If you go to a martial arts school that's strictly BJJ, you'll be sure to notice the difference in belts among students. Each form of martial arts has its own belt system, each with its own variation. For instance, the Tae Kwon Do Belt system typically consists of belts ranging from beginner White belt to expert Black Belt. Although belts may vary from school to school, the general ranking belt ranks are White, Yellow Stripe, Yellow,Green Stripe, Green, Blue Stripe, Blue, Red Stripe, Red, Black Stripe, Black for Tae kwon do. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ranking system consists of two categories, Youth / Junior Belts and Adult Belts. Junior Belts are intended for students aged 15 and under. The belts consist of White, Yellow, Orange and Green. Students 16 years and older use belts White, Blue, Purple, Brown, Black, Red. Note, 9th and 10th degree Black Belts are promoted to Red. However, the only people to have the Red belt are BJJ founding Gracie Brothers Helio, Carlos and their brothers.
